Local GW store suddenly closes doors.

Mystery and intrigue surrounds the sudden closing of one of the Bay Areas central GW outlets in Oakridge mall in San Jose California. Details remain sketchy as to why the store was closed without any sort of notice or warning but some rumors have surfaced to explain the sudden closer.

The leading story tells of a mass exodus of presumably unhappy employees who up and quit with no advance notice, leaving only two other employees in charge of the store who soon after also quit, this is of course only a rumor and the true story remains to be heard but we will attempt to get to the bottom of this.

Should there be any validity to this story one is left with many disturbing questions as to what could have lead to this rather drastic and dramatic conclusion, where the work conditions unbearable? Was it perhaps some sort of outward pressure from corporate overlords? Maybe even a hostile work environs. Alright so maybe we are sensationalizing things a tad, but you have to ask yourself, what could cause an entire staff to quit a paying job in a state with one of the highest unemployment levels in the country and on the tail end of one of the worst recessions in US history. Only questions remain, questions we may never answer but in the mean time a GW store sits empty, gates drawn and a community of gamers both new and old displaced indefinitely.

  1. You can always go to Game Kastle, they even have "online only" models in stock.

    Or WCC

  2. Also there is a 20% off sale at Gator, I grabbed a bunch of stuff yesterday.

Plenty of options if GW will not be bothered with taking your money.

  3. You can also go to Legends in Cupertino, they run 10% off all GW products all the time, basicly no sales tax, and a much friendlier atmosphere then D&J or GK (in my expirence anyways)

  4. It's pretty well known that GW is an atrocious company to work for. Though I'm more inclined to think the USA regional managers are just complete D-bags.

  5. So I was in the Oakridge store and was told by the "Manager" of the store that the entire staff had been let go for problems with "Theft". It amazed me that this person was being so open about this as I have to imagine this opens the company up to litigation for discussing this type of thing.

  6. Ditto on Gator Games. They have weekly 20% off sales on different sections of the store, or sometimes everything! They had 20% all miniatures for two weeks through labor day. Easily the best deals in the bay area retail.
Game Kastle is my favorite store in the area for stock and events. I really like the staff there and it is my favorite place to window shop.
D & J, having been my first hobby store back in 1981 for model rockets. It has slowly degenerated over the years. It is a quick stop for supplies on my way home over 17, but they don't even carry GW any more, so I rarely go.
Legends at Vallco has cool staff and the owner is one of the most engaging, hands-on people in the retail Bay Area gaming market. Real nice guy.
This only covers some of the great stores in the Bay Area. Gamescape in SF, End Game in Oakland, Black Diamond Games in Concord and Games of Berkeley are all great locations too.
